California’s CDL Extension Threatens Safety and Federal Law

California’s recent move to extend the deadline for revoking commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued to non-citizens has drawn sharp criticism from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who has labeled it a blatant violation of federal law.

In a fiery response, Duffy accused California Governor Gavin Newsom of deceiving the public regarding a supposed 60-day extension that would allow nearly 17,000 undocumented drivers to remain on the road.

As common sense dictates, these decisions pose a significant risk to safety.

Duffy stated, “Gavin Newsom is lying. The deadline to revoke illegally issued, unvetted foreign trucker licenses is still January 5. California does NOT have an ‘extension’ to keep breaking the law and putting Americans at risk on the roads.”

The situation stems from a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) audit revealing alarming systemic errors in California’s non-domiciled CDL program.

Reports indicate that licenses were issued to individuals who not only lacked legal status but also faced language barriers that prevent them from properly understanding traffic signs and road regulations.

Among the most troubling cases is that of Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant from India who reportedly obtained a CDL despite failing his knowledge test multiple times. Singh was eventually involved in a tragic accident resulting in the deaths of three Americans.

The substantial number of illegal drivers in California is a ticking time bomb, and it’s no surprise that Duffy has vowed to ensure California complies with federal regulations or face serious financial consequences.

Indeed, if California fails to act, the U.S. Department of Transportation may cut off nearly $160 million in federal funding.

This situation highlights a larger issue regarding the safety of American citizens versus the leniency shown towards illegal immigrants.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi has pointed to similar cases across various states where policies that favor non-citizens undermine the rights and opportunities of American students and workers.

The Justice Department's recent lawsuit against Virginia over its in-state tuition policy for immigrants without legal status reiterates the importance of adhering to federal law and ensuring that American citizens are not treated as second-class citizens in their own homeland.

Amid all this chaos, Republican leaders like Duffy and Bondi stand firm in their commitment to protect American citizens from a system that has become increasingly permissive towards illegal immigration.

Their unified stance represents a growing pushback against the progressive agenda that seeks to undermine law and order in the name of inclusivity and tolerance.

As Americans observe these developments, it is crucial to support leaders who prioritize the safety and integrity of this nation.
