In a bold display of leadership and unwavering support for persecuted Christians, a group of Republican lawmakers has traveled over 5,000 miles to Nigeria this past weekend.

Their goal? To send a strong message to the Nigerian government that the plight of Christians facing violence and persecution will not be overlooked.

Rep. Bill Huizenga of Michigan spearheaded the delegation, joined by Reps. Michael Baumgartner from Washington, Keith Self and Jefferson Shreve from Texas.

In light of the alarming persecution of Christians in Nigeria, Huizenga emphasized the importance of this trip, stating, “We’re watching, we’re paying attention, and we’re in solidarity with the Nigerian people.”

The statistics are grim; radical Islamic groups have killed more than 50,000 Christians in Nigeria since 2009, with around 7,000 fatalities reported just in the first half of 2025.

Rep. Huizenga seized the opportunity to meet key figures in Nigeria, including General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the newly appointed Minister of Defense, who himself is a practicing Christian.

This trip marks a pivotal moment, highlighting the urgent need for global leaders to address the escalating violence against Christians in regions where faith-based persecution is rampant.

The congressional delegation also underscores a continued commitment by the United States to demand accountability from foreign governments regarding their treatment of religious minorities.

As these lawmakers prepare to discuss their findings with President Trump, who previously designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to its dire human rights record for Christians, it’s clear the Trump administration will not shy away from taking decisive action.

In a recent statement, Trump underscored the consequences for the Nigerian government should they continue to allow the slaughter of Christians, signaling potential diplomatic and military ramifications.

In a world where much of the mainstream media often overlooks the plight of the persecuted, this visit has not only shed light on an ongoing humanitarian crisis but also reaffirmed the Republican Party's promise to stand firm in supporting freedom of worship worldwide.

As Congress prepares to reconvene, the focus will be on crafting strategies to hold Nigeria accountable while ensuring the safety and protection of vulnerable Christian communities.

The strong stance taken by these lawmakers represents a determined effort to advocate for those whose voices are often silenced in the face of tyranny and violence, reaffirming that the United States stands ready to fight for religious freedom globally.
