A coalition of 175 Republican lawmakers is urging the FDA to reverse the Biden administration’s controversial decision to allow mail-order abortions, citing significant health risks to women and undermining state laws designed to protect the unborn.

Led by U.S. Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Diana Harshbarger (R-TN), the letter highlights the dangers of the abortion pill mifepristone, particularly after a recent study revealed a substantial increase in reported complications among women who have taken the drug.

Since the FDA eliminated in-person dispensing requirements for these pills in 2021, there has been a marked rise in medication abortions, now accounting for an alarming 63% of all abortions in the U.S. This change has been described as a “mail-order abortion scheme,” enabling abortion providers in liberal states to send these drugs into pro-life states without necessary medical oversight.

The lawmakers' letter demands a reinstatement of strict safety measures, particularly an immediate return to in-person dispensing. They criticized the Biden administration's move as a part of its radical abortion agenda, asserting that the safety of women has been compromised in the name of increased access to abortion services.

"The dangerous Biden mail-order scheme was designed to give abortion activists license to mail drugs everywhere," they stated. The letter underscores the growing number of women reporting severe complications from medication abortions, which are now estimated to affect around 10.93% of women who use mifepristone, starkly contrasting with previously reported clinical trial data.

Furthermore, as the FDA and Health and Human Services (HHS) review the safety of abortion pills amidst rising concerns, Republicans are calling for a comprehensive investigation into the potential dangers posed by these drugs. They assert that the decision to facilitate mail-order abortions primarily benefits abortion providers while jeopardizing women's health and safety.

The GOP's strong stance against these policies reflects a broader commitment to protecting both unborn children and the well-being of women across the nation, holding the line against what they characterize as an erosion of pro-life values under the Biden presidency. The call for action from these lawmakers signals a renewed effort to safeguard life and restore accountability in federal healthcare policies affecting reproductive rights.

As the legislative landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the FDA and HHS will respond to these mounting pressures. The Republicans’ push is emblematic of a larger dialogue surrounding the intersection of health, safety, and moral responsibility in contemporary governance.
