Urgent Action Needed Against Christian Persecution in Nigeria

The alarming situation unfolding in Nigeria, where Islamic militants relentlessly target Christian communities, demands urgent attention from the United States government.

As reported by the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, the extent of the crisis is staggering.

An estimated 19,100 churches have been attacked since Boko Haram’s insurgency began in 2009, with roughly 100 churches being destroyed each month.

Most shockingly, over 185,000 Nigerians have reportedly lost their lives due to jihadist violence, with a disproportionate number—more than two-thirds—being Christians.

This ongoing religious persecution is often overlooked by mainstream media, which seems more focused on sensational stories that align with a particular narrative.

While antisemitic protests garner significant coverage, the brutal reality faced by Nigerian Christians remains largely ignored.

These attacks are not mere "land disputes" or simple local conflicts; they represent a systematic assault on Christianity in Nigeria.

Amidst this devastating environment, the Nigerian government has shown little intention to intervene or protect its Christian citizens, raising serious questions about its commitment to human rights.

This lack of action mirrors a broader trend where the world turns a blind eye to acts of genocide when it doesn't fit a certain agenda.

In a notable development, President Trump, during his earlier administration, designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern due to this worsening humanitarian crisis.

However, this designation was inexplicably reversed by the Biden administration, coinciding with an alarming rise in attacks against Christians.

Fortunately, there is hope on the horizon with Texas Senator Ted Cruz advocating for the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025.

This legislation aims to impose sanctions and diplomatic pressure on Nigerian officials who enable such persecution, seeking to restore Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern.

It is imperative that Congress act swiftly to address this humanitarian disaster.

Historical precedence shows us the dire consequences of inaction.

Without immediate intervention, the deep-seated Christian communities in Nigeria could be irreparably damaged, much like the tragic histories of religious civilizations in Turkey and Egypt.

As Christians continue to gather for worship despite the ever-present threat of violence, they display an inspiring commitment to their faith that deserves recognition and support from the international community.

The time has come for American leaders to respond decisively to the plight of these persecuted believers.

If we fail to act, we send a dangerous message that the lives of those suffering under oppression do not matter.

Let us not turn our backs on those whose faith is being systematically targeted, but instead stand up for religious freedom across the globe.
