Census Integrity Under Attack: Protecting American Representation

The fundamental integrity of the U.S. Census is under siege, as political strategist Ryan James Girdusky recently revealed that illegal immigrants may be the reason California retained up to 10 congressional seats it should have lost.

On his podcast, "It's a Numbers Game," Girdusky highlighted how the continued counting of undocumented immigrants in census apportionments has unjustly favored blue states like California and Illinois. This system effectively penalizes red states such as Texas, Tennessee, and Georgia, which are losing potential political representation due to a skewed method of population counting.

Girdusky's analysis is grounded in historical data, indicating that California has gained 10 additional congressional seats since 1980 primarily due to its large illegal immigrant population. Despite longstanding population trends suggesting California should be losing seats, the influx of immigrants has padded its numbers. Girdusky insists this practice is a direct result of failed governance in these blue states.

While applauding states like Texas for thriving due to both legal immigration and domestic migration, he argues that states with lower immigration, such as Georgia and Tennessee, are being shortchanged. He emphasized that these states should also be gaining representation, a sentiment echoed by RJ Hauman, president of the National Immigration Center for Enforcement.

Hauman described the issue as a constitutional crisis, stating that Americans are effectively being silenced in the electoral process when their votes are diluted by those who shouldn’t be counted. He criticized the Biden administration for reversing former President Donald Trump's 2020 executive order aimed at excluding illegal aliens from apportionment counts.

Under Trump's leadership, the administration sought to stabilize the integrity of the electoral process by ensuring a fair representation system rooted in citizenship. This controversial policy, although challenged in court, had garnered support from a significant portion of the American public who value lawful governance and equitable representation.

Critics of the approach, including some legal experts, argue that not counting noncitizens would violate constitutional mandates to count all persons. However, many feel that the ongoing disregard for this issue threatens to distort representation for future generations, raising significant concerns about the political landscape of the nation.

As an "Equal Representation Act" begins to pick up traction in Congress—aimed at ensuring that congressional seats are apportioned based solely on the citizen population—it becomes clear that safeguarding the integrity of American democracy is a pressing issue deserving of attention.

In this era where the political playing field is increasingly blurred by acts of legislative and executive maneuvering, recognizing the effects illegitimate counts have on the electoral system is essential for preserving the values at the core of our Republic. The path forward must prioritize not only the rule of law but also the voices of those who legally inhabit our great nation.
