Biden Allies Push for Early Nomination Amid Growing Discontent

President Joe Biden's allies are reportedly pushing for his formal nomination a month earlier than planned, according to a recent Bloomberg report. This move comes as a response to growing concerns and demands for Biden to step aside from the 2024 ticket.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is considering holding a virtual vote on July 21, just days after the convention's credential committee meets to formalize the rules and procedures for the event. The DNC had already planned on nominating Biden electronically prior to the in-person vote at the convention, which starts on August 19 in Chicago. However, the timeline has been significantly moved forward due to recent calls for Biden to step down.

A CBS News poll this week found that nearly half of Democratic voters want Biden to step aside and not accept the party's nomination. This sentiment is echoed by several prominent Democrats, including liberal comedian Bill Maher and Democratic strategist James Carville, who have urged the DNC to ditch Biden and hold an open convention to replace him.

On Tuesday, the first elected Democrat, Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, called for Biden to step down for the sake of down-ballot candidates. Doggett cited Biden's continued lag behind Democratic senators in key states and his trailing of Donald Trump in most polls as reasons for his concern.

Despite these calls, Biden has dismissed the idea of dropping out. "I know I’m not a young man, to state the obvious," Biden told supporters at a rally in North Carolina last week. "I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t talk as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know what I do know. I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong, and I know how to do this job."

This situation brings to mind the repeated calls from Democrats and the media for the 25th Amendment to be invoked over former President Trump, citing his alleged mental unfitness for office. However, these voices have fallen silent in the face of Biden's recent debate performance, which has raised questions about his own mental acuity.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the DNC will respond to the growing discontent within its ranks and whether Biden will indeed be formally nominated a month earlier than planned.
