Here's the latest on the Republican Party's efforts to ensure election integrity and combat left-wing bias in the media.

House Oversight Chairman James Comer has launched an investigation into the news-rating group NewsGuard, amid allegations that the company favors left-leaning publications over right-leaning ones. Comer seeks documents on NewsGuard’s business relationships with government entities, its adherence to policies intended to protect against bias, and its management of potential conflicts of interest.

NewsGuard has been contracted to work with government entities before, including the Department of Defense. However, the group said its work with the Pentagon was only related to Russian, Chinese, and Iranian disinformation that targets Americans. NewsGuard CEO Gordon Crovitz said Comer misunderstands the company's work and that NewsGuard is the only apolitical service rating news sources.

Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has started indirectly getting involved in the 2024 election by going after "conspiracy theorists." Garland wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post, claiming that Donald Trump supporters are undermining the judicial process in the United States by questioning the New York trial. Garland also accused those who claim that the DOJ is politicized to influence the election.

Republicans have prioritized election integrity this year with new laws, lawsuits, and congressional investigative subpoenas ahead of the November general election. House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil has subpoenaed 15 Cabinet officials for documents related to "Bidenbucks," which is President Joe Biden’s executive order to turn as many federal agencies as possible into get-out-the-vote centers across all states.

Steil has also focused on securing elections in Washington, D.C., to set an example for the rest of the country. Last month, the House Administration Committee held a hearing titled, "American Confidence in Elections: Preventing Noncitizen Voting and Other Foreign Interference." During the hearing, Steil said that 500 non-citizens are registered to vote in Washington, D.C.

As Congress focuses on passing laws and issuing subpoenas, GOP party committees are concentrating on filing lawsuits. On Wednesday, a Michigan judge partially ruled against Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's lenient guidance on signature verification, following a lawsuit brought by the Republican National Committee, Michigan Republican Party, and the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The Republican Party's efforts to ensure election integrity and combat left-wing bias in the media are crucial to maintaining the integrity of our democratic process. The GOP's multifaceted approach this election cycle contrasts with the party's strategy four years ago that mostly focused on litigation only. The GOP's commitment to ensuring free and fair elections is a testament to the party's dedication to upholding the principles of democracy.
