In a recent incident, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg criticized Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, for their association with certain flags and symbols. Buttigieg raised concerns about the unchecked power of SCOTUS justices and mentioned the lack of supervision over their decisions, stating that they hold substantial power for life.

Martha-Ann Alito expressed her desire to fly a "Sacred Heart of Jesus" flag in response to a nearby Pride flag, despite her husband's reluctance. Buttigieg emphasized the importance of the Supreme Court earning trust by making fair and impactful decisions affecting people's lives.

Additionally, Buttigieg took a jab at the Alitos for their involvement in displaying flags linked to the January 6 Capitol riot. The New York Times reported on flags associated with the riot being flown at the Alito residences.

Although SCOTUS spouses are not subject to Senate confirmation and are entitled to free speech, Buttigieg's remarks have sparked discussions on the ethical and symbolic implications of such actions.
