Abbott Extends Border Disaster Declaration, Slams Biden's Policies

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has extended the state's border security disaster declaration, citing a surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the border that pose a continued threat to local communities. The declaration, first issued on May 31, 2021, allows for more resources and strategies to be deployed to combat the influx of illegal immigrants into Texas.
Governor Abbott has blamed President Biden and his administration for making the problem of illegal immigration worse, stating that the federal government's "open border policies" have paved the way for dangerous gangs and cartels, human traffickers, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to pour into communities.
Since the launch of Operation Lone Star in March 2021, the multi-agency effort has led to the apprehension of more than 514,900 illegal immigrants and more than 44,600 criminal arrests, along with more than 38,900 felony charges. Texas law enforcement has also seized more than 504 million lethal doses of fentanyl.
Governor Abbott has stated that Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps created by the Biden Administration's refusal to secure the border. He has extended the disaster declaration several times, modifying the list of affected counties.
While Democrats have blamed Republicans in Congress for hypocrisy on the border crisis, Governor Abbott has remained steadfast in his commitment to securing the border and protecting Texas communities. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
The border security disaster declaration is set to expire on July 31, 2024, unless renewed by Governor Abbott.
