Pizza Hut Closes 15 Locations, More Than 120 Others in Danger as Restaurant Economy Struggles

Pizza Hut has shuttered 15 locations in Indiana, with more than 120 additional locations in danger of closing, according to a report from The Times of Northwest Indiana.

The closures come after a long-running dispute between the chain and a franchisee, EYM Group, which owns and operates 142 Pizza Hut locations in Illinois, Indiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. EYM has accused Pizza Hut of failing to modernize its menu and digital ordering system, putting the company at a significant disadvantage against competitors like Dominos and Little Caesars.

EYM Group filed suit against Pizza Hut in March 2023 over an alleged breach of contract. Pizza Hut opened a counter lawsuit earlier this month, also accusing the group of breach of contract over alleged financial discrepancies.

The latest closures follow a trend of sit-down restaurants closing nationwide. Major chains such as Applebees, Dennys, Cracker Barrel, and more have closed hundreds of locations due to rising costs and declines in sales as consumers struggle with inflation.

Pizza Hut's parent company, Yum Brands, recently reported that same-store sales at Pizza Hut declined by 7 percent last quarter. This decline in sales is not unique to Pizza Hut, as many other restaurants are also struggling to make a profit.

Inflation has been a significant issue for many Americans, with prices for goods and services rising at an alarming rate. This has led to a decrease in consumer spending, which has had a ripple effect on the economy. Many businesses, including restaurants, have been forced to raise prices to keep up with rising costs, which has led to a decrease in sales.

The Biden administration's economic policies have been criticized by many on the right for contributing to the current state of the economy. Critics argue that the administration's focus on climate change and social justice issues has come at the expense of the economy.

Former President Donald Trump, who was known for his pro-business policies, has been vocal about the current state of the economy. In a recent statement, Trump said, "The Biden administration's economic policies have been a disaster for the American people. Inflation is out of control, and businesses are struggling to stay afloat. It's time for a change."

The current state of the economy is a significant concern for many Americans, with inflation and the economy being top issues among all voters. According to a recent The Center Square Voters' Voice Poll, conducted in conjunction with Noble Predictive Insights, inflation/price increases (45%) and the economy/jobs (24%) are top concerns among voters.

As the restaurant industry continues to struggle, it is clear that something needs to be done to address the current state of the economy. Many on the right are calling for a return to pro-business policies, such as those implemented by the Trump administration, to help businesses and consumers alike.
