Over 36,000 evacuated in British Columbia over raging wildfires
Authorities in Canada’s British Columbia province say they have evacuated some 36,600 people affected by fierce wildfires as of Sunday, as major blazes continue to spread exacerbated by strong winds. Some 24,000 residents had to leave the city of Williams Lake and its surrounding areas, with over half of them doing so before the evacuation order was served according to Todd Stodd, BC’s Minister of Transportation who is also responsible for emergency management. Almost 3,000 firefighters are now battling 162 active fires in the region, authorities said Sunday. About 49 evacuation orders and 23 evacuations alerts have been issued so far, the biggest number since 2003, emergency responders reported.
