Biden's Delays Endanger U.S. Interests in Haiti

The Biden administration’s inaction on a rising tide of violence and chaos in Haiti underscores the critical need for decisive action—something the Trump administration had previously initiated but is now being neglected.

The United States has recently put forward up to $3 million for information leading to the disruption of Haiti’s notorious gang revenues. This announcement reflects a grim acknowledgment of the severe crisis engulfing the island nation. Organized gangs, like the newly formed Viv Ansanm and Gran Grif, have carved up control of Port-au-Prince and are responsible for horrific acts of violence, including mass killings and assaults on civilians.

The Trump administration had already recognized these Haitian gangs as Foreign Terrorist Organizations back in 2025, understanding their capacity to destabilize not only Haiti but also the broader region, which poses a direct threat to U.S. national interests. Secretary of State Marco Rubio articulated these sentiments at the time, identifying Haitian gang violence as a national security issue rather than a mere law enforcement challenge.

Fast forward to today, and the current administration seems more interested in playing catch-up than executing a cohesive strategy. Despite the dire humanitarian crisis, characterized by widespread murder, displacement, and governmental collapse, the Biden administration continues to grapple with its response while innocent civilians suffer the consequences.

Over 1.45 million Haitians are now displaced, with gang violence running rampant and undermining any semblance of governance. Conditions on the ground are dire, with families living under the constant threat of violence, forced from their homes, and often lacking even basic necessities like food and clean water.

This deterioration is not simply a humanitarian issue; it is a clear national security concern. The gangs' ability to disrupt local and international operations—in particular their actions against the United Nations-backed security efforts—calls for an urgent and effective U.S. response.

Moreover, the financial incentives offered by the U.S. government could help unravel the complicated web of corruption that has allowed these criminals to thrive. Recognizing the structure behind the gang activity illustrates a necessary pivot in strategy, one that focuses on cutting off their sources of financial support and dismantling the networks that allow them to operate with impunity.

This targeted effort to disrupt gang finances aligns with the Trump administration's proactive approach and aligns with conservative principles of securing American interests abroad by addressing threats at their root. As the current leadership struggles to keep pace, it becomes increasingly evident that a return to the policies that effectively identified and addressed such threats is not just preferable, but essential for the stability of our hemisphere.

Without decisive action and a clear strategy, Haiti's suffering—and the threat to U.S. interests—will continue unabated. The nation needs leadership that will take firm action rather than allowing the chaos to fester.
