Virginia NAACP sues school board after it restores Confederate names for two buildings.

The Virginia NAACP has filed a lawsuit against the Shenandoah County school board after it decided to restore Confederate military names for two buildings. The district had previously changed the names following the death of George Floyd in 2020.

The move by the school board has been criticized by NAACP Virginia State Conference President Cozy Bailey, who called it "embracing the cold wind of intolerance and division and insensitivity." Bailey also claimed that the decision "resurrected the ghosts of the Jim Crow era."

Other activists have also expressed their disapproval of the decision. Tyler Whittenberg, deputy director of the Opportunity to Learn program for the Advancement Project, said that the move is "directly linked to efforts to keep Black children out of school, to subjugate Black communities and keep them away from the benefits of education."

James Jones, assistant professor and director of the Center for Politics and Race in America at Rutgers University, added that the decision is "creating an inhospitable environment for students of color to really learn and thrive socially."

However, some have defended the decision to restore the Confederate names. Senator Ted Budd (R-NC) praised the UNC-Chapel Hill board for "recognizing common sense and pushing back against the woke mob." Budd also criticized efforts to remove DEI from North Carolina public universities, calling them "virtue signaling."

The lawsuit filed by the Virginia NAACP is the latest in a series of legal challenges to efforts to remove Confederate symbols and names from public spaces. Supporters of these efforts argue that they are necessary to promote racial justice and equality, while opponents claim that they are an attempt to erase history and impose political correctness.

The outcome of the lawsuit is uncertain, but it is likely to be closely watched by both sides of the debate. The decision by the Shenandoah County school board to restore the Confederate names has reignited the debate over the role of Confederate symbols in public spaces and the legacy of the Confederacy in American history.
