In a strange announcement, Billionaire Tom Steyer says he will not run for President against President Trump but will focus his efforts on Trump’s impeachment.
WASHINGTON—Tom Steyer, a billionaire environmentalist from California, said Wednesday he wouldn’t seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, focusing instead on his multimillion-dollar effort to impeach President Trump.
Mr. Steyer said during an appearance in Iowa, the home of the nation’s first presidential caucuses, that he would spend at least $40 million in 2019 to promote efforts to impeach the president. He said his plan would include town-hall meetings across the nation and an “impeachment summit” in Washington, D.C., in late January, all aimed at mobilizing millions of people to press for the president’s impeachment.
“I will be dedicating 100% of my time, effort and resources to one cause: working for Mr. Trump’s impeachment and removal from office,” Mr. Steyer said in Des Moines. “I am not running for president this time. Instead, I’m strengthening my commitment to ‘Need to Impeach’ in 2019 until the House starts impeachment proceedings or Mr. Trump resigns. That’s how we will define success.”
The Steyer-backed Need to Impeach, which was launched in October 2017, plans to focus some of its attention on supporters who live in House districts held by Democratic lawmakers who lead committees with investigative powers, including Reps. Adam Schiff and Maxine Waters of California, Richard Neal of Massachusetts, Jerrold Nadler of New York and Elijah Cummings of Maryland.
