Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday called for an investigation into alleged illegal voting in Travis County after conservative group Project Veritas published a video that purported to show Travis County poll workers saying that non-citizens could vote.
“I can’t verify if this is accurate,” Abbott wrote in a tweet. “I CAN verify that it will be investigated and if it IS accurate, illegal votes will be tossed out and wrongdoers will be prosecuted.”
In the video, posted by the group Tuesday, a woman off-camera asks two Travis County poll workers, in a variety of ways, whether her boyfriend, whom she says is part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, may vote. The woman in the Project Veritas video tells both poll workers that her boyfriend, who is not shown on the video, is a registered voter.
Non-citizens are not eligible to vote in the United States.
The video shows poll workers telling the woman that anyone who is registered can vote, and they advise the woman to have her boyfriend present his identification to vote, just as Texans are required to do at the polls.
