Vice President releases statement on sham election

The United States has rejected the rigged election won by socialist leader Nicolas Maduro. According to reports, Maduro's opponents were barred from running causing citizens to boycott the election, thus guaranteeing socialist's victory.

Vice President Mike Pence released a statement on Venezuela's sham election. The VP says it was neither free nor fair.

44 Venezuela's election was a sham - neither free nor fair. The illegitimate result of this fake process is a further blow to the proud democratic tradition of Venezuela. Every day, thousands of Venezuelans flee brutal oppression and grinding poverty — literally voting with their feet. The United States will not sit idly by as Venezuela crumbles and the misery of their brave people continues. America stands against dictatorship and with the people of Venezuela. The Maduro regime must allow humanitarian aid into Venezuela and must allow its people to be heard.

Nicolas Maduro won Venezuela's presidential election by a landslide. He won 68 percent of the votes.

Once a thriving economic powerhouse, under Maduro's socialist rule, Venezuela is now a dying country.

A social crisis years in the making has worsened as Venezuela's oil production — the source of almost all of its foreign income — has collapsed to the lowest level in decades and financial sanctions by the Trump administration has made it impossible for the government to renegotiate its debts. More than 1 million people have fled the country in the past two years and 14,000 percent inflation has crushed the minimum wage to less than $2 a month.
