A convoy of military vehicles has been spotted driving towards the Zimbabwean capital of Harare, according to witnesses and video footage, just a day after the army chief threatened to intervene over purges in the ruling party. (more)
The latest developments began just before 3 p.m. local time on Tuesday when multiple armored vehicles and dozens of soldiers were seen along a main road, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the capital Harare.
It was not immediately known how many military personnel had been deployed and what their purpose is. Witnesses told the Reuters news agency that tanks were also seen, though those were not visible in video footage.
The movement comes just a day after General Constantino Chiwenga warned that the army could intervene if infighting continued in the ruling ZANU-PF party. Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa was fired last week after President President Robert Mugabe accused him of disloyalty and deceitfulness.
