President Joe Biden’s likely nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives pushed dubious claims about the Waco siege to support tighter restrictions on so-called assault rifles. David Chipman claimed in a post on the social media site Reddit that Branch Davidian members shot down two government helicopters using .50-caliber Barrett rifles. Members of the religious sect reportedly shot at and damaged a trio of helicopters hovering over their compound, but none of the aircraft were shot down. Four ATF agents and 82 Branch Davidian members were killed during a 51-day standoff. Chipman also called to “ban the future production and sale to civilians” of assault rifles.
