Democratic National Convention unveils list of speakers including AOC and Hillary

The Democratic National Convention on Tuesday unveiled a schedule of speakers including NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo, firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Hillary Clinton and 2016 GOP presidential candidate John Kasich.

The virtual four day event, titled “Uniting America,” represents the Democratic Party’s increasingly large ideological spectrum and also set off frenzied speculation over who could be Joe Biden’s running mate.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif) is considered the front-runner to join Biden’s ticket but is slated to speak on Thursday evening while Biden’s VP will appear on Wednesday. Former national security advisor Susan Rice, another main candidate, does not appear on the list of speakers.

But convention planners deliberately scheduled speaking times for some of the top vice presidential contenders in case they are not picked, the New York Times reported.

Monday’s kick off features former presidential hopefuls Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn), Empire State Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and former first lady Michelle Obama.

According a DNC release, these notable speakers represent the leaders who are rising up to combat challenges such as the coronavirus pandemic and will help Biden in “rebuilding the country.”

Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich who ran against President Trump in the 2016 GOP primary will also appear on the first night in what is being described as a display of unity and the large anti-Trump coalition backing Biden.
